I use podcasts to get through the parts of my day that aren’t nearly as entertaining as I’d like: my job, the dishes, the laundry, the occasional walk to work when my sister needs the car, etc. So I keep my favorite podcasts, of several varying genres, ready to go at a moment’s notice. I’ve got comedy, horror, DnD, educational, current events, and a few that I would classify as “chill,” each ready for whatever mood might strike me. This past week I learned that my favorite podcast network, Maximum Fun, welcomed a new show to their family, and I have very quickly welcomed that show into my rotating cast of favorites.
Triple Click is a new video game podcast hosted by Maddy Myers, Kirk Hamilton, and Jason Schreier, three professionals in video game journalism and reporting. Their previous podcast, Kotaku Splitscreen, ran from September 2015 until April 2020 on the gaming blog Kotaku and discussed “all things gaming… and maybe more.”
In Triple Click’s debut episode on April 23, they promise that the show will be “same people, same dumb jokes, new podcast feed, brand new title.” They’re looking to try some new things, and hope that “it’s going to be maybe a little bit more focused of a show.”

I was hesitant at first. Being something of a casual gamer I was a little intimidated by the hosts’ experience in the industry. While I play frequently, I often jump from game to game, stopping and starting as I lose interest, and play on lower difficulties. I’m in it for the fun, for the art and the story, and for a little bit of stress relief and escapism. So while the description and the trailer promised a very non-serious, light-hearted attitude I was still a little concerned that I may be lost at points. It’s common for people who are very knowledgeable about a certain topic to make assumptions about what everyone knows.
The first episode, “What Video Games Assume You Know,” set me right at ease. While I’m only one episode in, my first impression is that both new and experienced gamers, or even just people interested in video games, will enjoy their discussion and banter. It was fun and easy listening, and I even learned a few things! I look forward to future episodes, and to adding “video games” as a possible choice of podcast genre in my daily life.
I haven’t listened to their previous podcast yet (though I may dive in during the week-long wait for an episode 2), so I can’t attest to any change in the focus level of the show or the jokes.
