Why Do We Demand Backwards Compatibility Every New Generation

With the dawn of a new age of gaming just around the corner, there has been one particular issue that all gamers have been concerned with: Backwards Compatibility. With just two weeks left until the release of the great PlayStation 5, many potential buyers are unsure of the system’s capabilities concerning playing their older games on the next generation. So why do we demand this every new generation? Why do we want to play games that are designed for one console to be played on its successor? It’s simple. Humans are naturally afraid of change, and this is no different.

We’ve gotten comfortable with our games this generation. There are some title that we play everyday, and have been playing for the past 10 years. For me it’s Minecraft and any Elder Scrolls title. I have been playing this game ever since I got it on my Xbox 360 way back in the day. I switched to PlayStation after some certain life events, and got it for that, then again for the PlayStation 4. Guess what, I’ll get it again for the PlayStation 5 if it’s an upgraded version. I do this because I’m comfortable with it. I know it’s a great game, because I’ve played it for so long.

The issue comes down to us not having enough time. Being an adult gamer who works 40 hours a week, I have to carefully choose what games I play. I mean, I don’t want to spend money and take away time I could br spending with my family to play a game that’s horrible. We’ve all done it at least once. That one game you for sure was gonna be great, but turned out to be an absolute travesty. Looking at you Lichdom: Battlemage

Look, I’m not saying it’s a bad thing to have inclusion, but we need to keep in mind that this is a new generation. There are more stories to be told instead of reliving past adventures. It’s okay to take a chance on a new game or franchise in general. Do your research before dropping that big money on a game, independent reviews are your best friend when choosing a new game. Don’t get a new console just to play the same games, let’s embrace this new era in gaming and be excited for the new experiences coming our way. It’s going to blow your mind.

Let’s appreciate what came before, but look forward to the future of gaming. This new generation of gaming is going to let us experience things that could only be achieved on super advanced PCs. It’s our time console gamers. Enjoy it!

The PlayStation 5 drops November 12, 2020 for $499 and $399 for the digital edition.
