Welcome back, Militia! It’s September, which means that I am gearing up to watch some new anime as the weather grows cooler. One anime in particular that I have heard a lot of… things… about is The Way of the Househusband, which dropped on Netflix earlier this year. I just knew that I needed to give this one a shot after doing a little reading on it.
So, this action-packed slice-of-life follows an ex-yakuza gangster leader named Tatsu as he lives as an exemplary househusband – trying to get the best deals at the grocery, cleaning tough laundry stains, gardening herbs, and supporting his cute closeted otaku wife, Miku, as she heads as the breadwinner at her designer job. The animation is simplistic, almost on the same level of a visual novel with the sparing use of actual animated scenes. There are only five episodes on Netflix (as of 9/10/21) but each one is broken down into several mini-episodes, which total out to be thirty mini-episodes across this season. There doesn’t seem to be much of a relevance with each segment, just random slice-of-life moments.

I’ve heard a lot of conflicting opinions regarding this Netflix adaptation for those reasons and more. Honestly, I can see how the animation style and the choppiness of the episodes could possibly be annoying to some. I haven’t yet had a chance to read the manga, which I have heard great things about, and some are comparing the greatness of the manga to the anime and not getting satisfying results. But in my opinion, I find the anime charming! I actually enjoy the bite-sized episodes, and the animation style doesn’t bother me too much because I am enjoying the story.
What I take away from watching the series is that The Way of the Househusband is not meant to be taken too seriously. It is a fun, short series that can easily be watched when you just need to unwind and watch something lighthearted. I’ve even learned some neat househusband tips! Like rubber gloves can be used to remove dog hair quickly. As a pug owner this is definitely on my list to try. I’m personally really looking forward to seeing the new episodes that are set to drop October 7th.
Have you had a chance to check out the Netflix adaptation of The Way of the Househusband? What did you think? Let us know in the comments below! ✌

I really disliked the animation style and ultimately I wasn’t invested enough in the story to keep watching. I think if I ever wanted to know what happens in the story, I’d choose to read it because the style just didn’t work for me.

That is completely valid and understandable! I’m typically not into this sort of animation style, I usually find it to be lazy. But I did enjoy the funny scenarios! Thanks so much for your take! ✌
